Bed bugs are small, oval, brownish insects that live on the blood of humans or animals. Their body is flat and are about the size of an apple seed; however once they have had a blood meal, their bodies will swell and they take on a more reddish brown colour. Bed bugs are travelers and often will enter your home undetected when luggage, bags, used beds, furniture or clothing are brought into your home.

They are small and flat and can hide anywhere and can often transfer to other rooms in the home.  Females lay hundreds of eggs that are as small as a speck of dust, so they can easily take hold in your home quite quickly.

People will often complain of being bitten and itchy after they have been laying in an affected bed or sitting on a lounge.

An extremely thorough inspection of the affected and surrounding rooms of the home needs to be carried out before treatment takes place.

As bed bugs are small and flat and their eggs so tiny, it is extremely important to investigate all areas of the rooms such as beds, soft furnishings, furniture, skirting boards, telephones, clock radios, carpet edges, picture frames and electrical outlets. If clothes have been unpacked from affected luggage into wardrobes, wardrobes and clothes need to be inspected also.

The evidence we are looking for is live bed bugs and their eggs, bed bugs skin casings and excrement, blood stains on sheets or pillowcases and an offensive musty odour that the bugs give off from their scent glands.

Additional Information

A thorough Inspection and treatment can take from 2-4 hours depending on the severity of the infestation and we will require clear access to all affected rooms of the home.

Before we arrive, all suspect bed linen, clothing and curtains need to be removed carefully from the room in garbage bags (so they don’t spread) and taken to the laundry and washed in hot water. Once dry, they need to be placed in the clothes dryer on hot. Any items that can not be washed, such as stuffed toys, shoes etc, can be placed in the dryer and run of hot for at least 30 minutes. Vacuum the room and bed and empty the contents of the vacuum cleaner into a plastic bag, seal it and place it in the garbage bin outside.

Our inspector will thoroughly inspect the affected rooms and their contents such as beds, furniture, wardrobes, etc, and treat all areas where bed bugs are hiding or can hide with insecticides that are safe for use in these situations.

Once the area is treated, please leave it undisturbed for 24 hours. You can then vacuum up any dead bed bugs and eggs and place the contents of the vacuum cleaner into a plastic bag and seal it and place it in the external garbage bin.

We highly recommend you invest in a bed bug mattress cover to ensure your mattress is protected from any further bed bug infestation. These are available for purchase from our office. Clean clothes and curtains can then be reintroduced to the rooms.

Wet weather will not affect the completion of this treatment.
