- What are
- Carpet Beetles
- ?
Carpet beetles are small oval shaped beetles that generally live outside in the garden and adult beetles feed on pollen from flowers. They can often be brought into a home on fresh flowers or can come in through open windows and doors. Once inside they find their nesting site and lay their eggs and when the larvae hatch, they start feeding on the carpet and other items such as wool, fur, felt, silk, feathers, skins, and leather.
All these materials contain keratin, an animal protein, which carpet beetle larvae feed on. Blended fabrics such as cotton, polyester, and rayon when combined with wool can also be attacked, as with fabrics that are heavily stained with food or body oils. They will generally infest carpets and stored items such as blankets and clothes and items in undisturbed areas.
- About Our
- Carpet Beetles
- Treatment
Often a homeowner will notice bare patches of carpet or beetles, skins, or larvae on infested items or even on accumulated pet hair along skirting boards. Please leave these findings in the areas you found them so our inspector can see these when they arrive.
Our inspector will carry out a thorough inspection of the home and in particular areas where carpet beetle has been discovered and treat with an approved, safe insecticide.
In the case where clothing, furnishings or blankets have been affected, we recommend that these items be washed and dried on a hot setting or wrapped in a sealed plastic bag and frozen at 0 degrees for one week. Often when carpet beetle is discovered inside, we recommend a spray treatment to the gardens outside the windows as well.
